2012: Not a pond

“Put yourself in a pond and over time it’s going to get stagnant and become a cesspool,” he explained. “A river flows, it’s ever-changing. You can make a curvy river straight over a million years. And it’s not what’s on top going down the river, it’s those grooves in the bottom. But let’s not be ponds. Let’s keep growing.”
– Bo Bice, 2005

After seven years you think I’d have learned to expect a lot of twists and turns. After all, Bo’s been reinventing himself pretty much since the day we met him, changing from a nervous, soft-spoken hippie in a homemade tunic to a swaggering tight-pantsed sex god in just a few months. Still, this last year had curves like no other. Bo invited peeps to his house, painted for profit, had a girl, left Nashville, tried the college circuit, joined an AI review in Branson, embraced twitter, announced he was going gospel, started a management company and then signed himself, changed his bandmates more than his socks, revived The Real Thing, and was cast in the lead role of Broadway musical. And those are just the highlights!

So after all that flowing and changing and growing, I’m a little disoriented. I don’t really know where Bo’s going with his music or his career. I’m disappointed that he didn’t release any new songs this year. I’m sad to see him struggle to find an audience at times. And yet…. I don’t think that his voice has ever sounded better. I do believe he’s spent more time on the road this year than ever before. I can’t help but be impressed with Bo’s determination – knock him down, he gets back up. Make jokes about his career, and his honest response charms you into admiration. Shut the door in his face, he goes looking for a window. Is it fearlessness? Titanium balls? Sheer stubbornness? I don’t know. But wherever he’s headed, I think he’s going to find a way to get there.

Help me out here, peeps. What do you make of 2012? What’s going to surprise us in 2013?

Thanks for the blog, Jenn, I’m just glad I was part of the 2012 BB journey, I had a blast at all of it! 2013 sure promises to be interesting and I wish the best life has to offer to Bo and his beautiful family. And I plan to be as much a part of the 2013 leg of the journey as possible. I think he’s a fearless, titanium-balled, stubborn dude and he makes me smile.

I’m with you, Jenn, in that I had hoped for new music in 2012. And, yet, the consistent touring schedule made me smile, ending in snowy, frozen WI of all places. I’m always proud of what Bo accomplishes because it has to take so much determination and nerves of steel to be in the music business. What has not changed this past year is Bo’s happiness in his career, family and faith and you can always see that on his face. I’m anxious for 2013, for the gospel CD, the reports from his Broadway debut and anything else Bo wants to throw at us. I’m ready!
