A long, long road
Way back in 2000, Bo rounded up some pals in Muscle Shoals and put out a record called Recipe For Flavor. The 5 song EP hasn’t been available for several years, until it turned up on the merchandise table at Bo’s last few concerts. Today, RFF joined See The Light in the store at Bobice.com.
Recipe For Flavor is a nice little gem of an album, and in my mind is a must for Bo fans. It showcases his early songwriting, and Bo’s glorious voice is front and center throughout. RFF also features appearance from several people on the 2008 Bo music scene - Jon Davis, the drummer, just joined Bo’s current band. On keyboards is Chris Tompkins, who co-wrote two tracks on STL.
Do yourself a favor and get this album. And then come back here and tell me what Jesus Is My Neighbor is all about. The growly opening line of that song make my heart go pitty-pat, but after that - what is he talking about?

I bought RFF right after AI. I had’nt listened to it for quite sometime. Been on STL. I started listening to it yesterday and fell in love with it all over again. Bo’s voice is just so amazing. I’m not sure what JIMN is about, I just know he has a telephone, but never hears it ring.

I enjoy RFF, but have often had that same “Huh?” moment when listening to JIMN. Jesus, however, must not have pimped out his car because “his windows have no tint.”
I do love “Hold On” and fire it up on my iPod regularly. No Bo fan should be without it!

“Hold On” is my first favorite Bo song. I’ve always loved the keyboards and drums on that song, and lookie who recorded those parts - Jon Davis and Chris Tompkins.
I agree this album is a must for any Bo fan. I was lucky enough to buy a copy when Bo was on AI and I listened to it all the time. His voice sounds amazing and I think of that album as foreshadowing what was to come with STL. Get thee to the BB store and pick up a copy. You won’t regret it. (Though I’m still not sure what JIMN means, either. Hee. I think it’s talking about finding faith, but I could be wrong.) I’m just thrilled that it’s available today.

Jesus’ windows have no tint so you can see right in - he has a telephone in his room, but he hasn’t answered Bo yet. He’s all around but he’s a complete mystery. C’mon people!

Lulu, I take “Jesus is My Neighbor” at face value. Meaning that Jesus (or your God) is in all of us and all around us, including the guy next door planting flowers in his garden. I envision Bo going out the door of his house every day, coffee cup in hand, early morning sun shining in his face, saying “hello” to his Jesus and his faith. If your car window has no tint, we can see “inside” and know who you are. So Bo knows who his Jesus is and knows what is faith is all about. We can see it in his eyes.
That’s my interpretation for what it’s worth. I may be totally off base, but I don’t think you ever know the true meaning of any artist’s song unless they tell you point blank. Perhaps, Lulu, at your next Bo concer, you could come out from behind the ficus and ask Bo what this song means. I bet he’d be glad to tell you.

Bo may not remember exactly what this song means - he wrote it in the 90’s, didn’t he?

Yeah, I also took the no tint in the windows as meaning, “windows to your soul” so to be open to your faith or love of others and/or self. Then the telephone part of JC not answering, maybe because we have to find the answers for ourselves? Because WE are all part of God - like when Jewel sings in “Hands” how we are all actually God’s eyes & hands. That God is not something outside but is actually all of our souls working together. A concept that Jesus talked about that is actually also very much in Eastern religions and it’s been speculated that JC may have even run into those from the East during those 7 yrs. of being unaccounted for in the Bible.
I could just be looking “too deep” though and totally off-base. It is just speculation.
Even though it’s been a long time since Bo wrote this song, he’s often said he’s very proud of this CD and so I bet he’d remember it. So I bet you could ask him about it and he’d probably remember and give you a good answer.
“Hold On” is also my fav. on the CD too. He performed it on a Stickem’ chat this past year and it totally ROCKED! It’s always been one of my faves.
I’ve already “Hinted Heavily” to my hubby that I’d love to get that CD and new green t-shirt with the pic of Bo & the car for “Mothers Day.” Maybe some of you other mom’s out there can do the same.
I’m still waiting for a child size t-shirt for my daugther who’s also a big fan though. Since I heard lots of parents are bringing their kids to concerts now, I would think there would be a market to have at least ONE child size t. Also, with “Build-A-Bear” work shop being so successful now, I think it’d be cute if they had one Teddy Bear size one that “Sherman, the wise & all knowing bear, could model.”

That’s true jenn, and now someone says that it’s actually about a neighbor who was always annoying him, so there goes my theory!

I’d forgotten how much fun it was to listen to this. It really took me back to 2005 when I played it constantly. The last note of Jesus Is My Neighbor is just stunning in its beauty. I’m glad he’s selling it again - wonder how its sales compare to STL!
